In last week’s newsletter, I shared a fun tip that if you do physical exercise within 4 hours of learning something new, you are more likely to store that in your long-term memory. It made me think of another mental/physical connection that I like to put into practice, and I want to share it so that you can think about maybe putting it into practice, too! It’s the act of visualizing your goals, whatever they may be (possibly completely unrelated to anything physical- could be achieving a promotion or building your dream home), and envision them coming to fruition while you workout.
If you think about it, professional athletes do this all the time. They use visualization to create the mind-body connection of their goal and their success happening. They envision themselves hitting the game-winning 3, they envision themselves beating the undefeated champion, they envision themselves crushing their previous race time. This tactic is proven to make them more successful and for that goal to be more likely to happen. They practice shooting that three pointer, they practice getting faster…so that their body can achieve what their mind has manifested. The repetition paired with the muscle-memory and self-affirming beliefs all work together for your benefit.
So the idea of applying this to your everyday, non-professional athlete life is the same…except your goal may be something completely unrelated to the act of working out, but visualizing yourself in that winning situation that you desire while you are physically working hard will strengthen that mental bond and belief in yourself that you will make it happen. Your belief in your ability is such a huge part of whether or not you will be successful, so try this to be more successful at achieving your goals this year by adding this technique into your workouts next time you have a goal you’d like to achieve, and watch & see how much more confident and dominant you are at getting there. You got this.
