If you’ve read any of my blog posts over the last couple weeks you’ve probably gleaned that I love New Years and the fresh start & blank slate that it brings. I think something about the energy of a New Year can be so inspiring and refocusing. One thing I’ve seen a lot of this year, however, is almost a push telling people not to set goals. Some things I’ve read have almost villianized it…as if wanting to become a better version of yourself, no matter how small the improvement, isn’t a worthy effort. So today I just want to talk through my personal mindset for the New Year when it comes to setting goals and silencing doubt…and hopefully you will find it helpful if you’ve felt the same way!
Setting Goals and Silencing Doubt
I know 2020 was really hard on people, so I understand some sending out the message that if you don’t want to do anything but survive this year, that’s totally fine. And it is. I certainly won’t try to do the very thing I’m speaking against in this post and tell you what goals you should or should not set. My point in writing any of this is to tell you to shut out the noise. There are messages I believe are meant to keep you where you are, put out by those I don’t believe can understand the difference between personal growth and self love. There seems to be this message out there that if you’re setting goals to be a better person (whether it’s improving your fitness, setting career goals, personal goals, whatever) that must mean you aren’t happy with who you are.
It’s entirely possible to love yourself as you are and still want to become a better version of yourself. The main message I want to send here is: do what makes YOU happy and what serves YOU. And don’t let anybody, whether it’s in person or over the internet, make you feel bad about the new lifestyle choices you’re deciding to make.
“You will never be criticized by someone doing more than you. You will only be criticized by someone who is doing less.”
Read that again.
My personal mindset is: head down, focus on your goals, & don’t pay attention to the noise around you whether it’s someone trying to bring you down or you comparing your journey to someone else’s. Don’t pay attention to those things. Focus on you, silence any doubt that may come from others or even your own mind, and take it day by day. You know yourself best, you know what serves you, and you know your intentions.
Go out & work every day to make your goals and dreams happen…because you’re worthy and capable of every single one.
xo,
Bess
