I really love the turn of a New Year. It feels like such a fresh start filled with so many potentials and opportunities. It’s exciting to think of what new things a year can bring. I know 2020 did not pan out the way a lot of us (or most of of us) could have anticipated, but I’m not going to let that dampen my spirits for 2021. In this post, I am going to share my new year “routine” with you, including everything I do to mentally prepare for the New Year!
My New Year Routine
Something I really love to do and so look forward to (I’ve been looking forward to doing this for WEEKS if not months now, lol) is on January 1st I like to sit down and write out – pen to paper style – my 2021 goals. I know this isn’t groundbreaking and that many of you probably do it! But if you don’t, don’t overlook the importance of actually writing something down. It takes an idea or a hope out of your imagination and gives it physical life on that paper. To me, it’s one step closer to making it come true.
I personally like to wait for January 1 to do this when I’m filled with the energy of the new year and I can leave the past in the past. Everything going forward feels unchained from any negativity or heaviness that I might have experienced in the previous year. For that very reason, I am not sharing my goals here just yet, but will at the beginning of 2021 when I can give them my complete attention with that new energy.
Another thing that I like to do is get a bunch of new notebooks for the new year (I love love love a fresh notebook and will share some favorites below!) and crack open my favorite to write these goals down. Something about the first page of a blank notebook really symbolizes a new year to me, and again bringing goals to life by not only writing them down but putting them first in this notebook. It demonstrates the actual priority that I will give to those goals and dreams.
The goals and dreams can be anything, big or small, professional or personal, physical or mental or emotional or spiritual…anything. Nothing is too unimportant not to write down. If it’s a tiny change you want to make, write it down. If it’s a big scary goal, write it down.
On that note (literally), a new agenda is a must for me. I got this one. I got the black but I don’t think it’s still available, but this light pink color is really pretty too! It’s the same on the inside.
Also, I don’t just do this in any setting. I like to find a quiet time where my mind will be completely uninterrupted, so I can 100% focus. I don’t do this while Emma is playing with a bunch of loud toys or with the TV on. Light a candle, find a quiet, comfy spot, and write it all down.
As a blogger/content creator, another thing I like to do is write out a huge list of blog post topics or ideas for the year. It’s great to have a notebook full of ideas I can grab if I experience those weeks where I’m not feeling particularly inspired to write about anything. You might not be a blogger but you can do something similar to this, too. Plan ahead a little bit for the year, whatever that looks like, so that you are making life a little easier on yourself down the road. I find this can help alleviate a little stress from the future too when you feel like you have extra planning in place to help you out!
Lastly, I do love to go through Pinterest and find quotes that I really want to embody my year ahead, or ones I think I’d benefit from hearing on days when I am feeling doubtful of myself or lacking motivation. I’ll be sharing a lot of my favorites on my Instagram stories the month of January!
So, that’s about it! That’s basically how I prepare my mind for a new year. I hope this has helped and let me know if you have any new years routines you like to do!
