Despite the fact that it was a solid 65 degrees & sunny everyday last week and I was running in shorts and a t-shirt, generally speaking, in January it’s typically very cold and therefore tempting to stay inside rather than taking my workout outside. But usually, no matter how tempting it may be, I found ways to get my booty outside and still get that run in. I’m going to share how to stay active in the cold winter months and at the very least make the colder weather more tolerable!
Pretty much this all really boils down to what you are wearing. If the cold is what is keeping you inside, then keeping yourself warm is the easy solution! So after years of trying out what works to keep me warm and still allows me to be mobile and not waddle like a snowman, I’m going to share so hopefully it’ll be helpful for you.
Cold Weather Running Attire
High Waisted Leggings: My personal favorites for cold weather running are the Spacedye Leggings from Beyond Yoga. They are so soft and a little thicker than others. I also have always really found good leggings from Target (the Champion line!)
Thick Running Socks: No one wants cold toes! Also special running socks help prevent blisters and are thicker than normal socks. I really love these!
Under Armour Cold Gear Turtleneck: When it’s really cold, this is a must as a base layer. I always wore them during super cold soccer games and they really help trap the heat but keep you dry despite sweating, so your sweat isn’t making you cold.
Long Sleeve top (preferably with Thumbholes): I love the selection at Lululemon, and I’ve personally had this top in these pictures for over 7 years. Seriously. It is still in brand new shape and I have worn it A LOT. So yes they are a little pricey, but definitely worth it. If it’s outside your price range, again Target is a great place to check!!
Ear Warmer: This one is sort of self-explanatory but I do prefer the ear wrap style over a toboggan (or beanie if you aren’t from the south, lol) because it’s easier for your ponytail.
Neck Gaiter: Again, when it’s really cold I like to wear my neck gaiter because it keeps your neck warm AND you can pull it up over your mouth and nose when your face gets cold. Love it.
Running Jacket: While I’m not wearing one in the photos, when it is cold I am ALL about wearing a jacket and I love ones that zip up to cover my neck and it’s a must that they have zip pockets for my phone and key. This one from Target looks great and that $30 price tag is even better!
Gloves with touch screen fingertips: This are a game changer! Who wants to take their gloves off to do something on their phone?! Nope. Definitely a must.
Of course, if it’s REALLY cold, you can always get some hand warmers but I wouldn’t recommend running in them, they might be uncomfortable in your shoes!
Hope this helps! Don’t let cold weather be an excuse to keep you inside. And remember, once you get moving, it’ll feel at least 10 degrees warmer once you get your heart rate up! Even more motivation to run faster 😉
