Working out in the winter is challenging for some, especially when you may not have access to a gym. The good news is that you don’t need a gym to work on yo’ fitness in the winter months. Some of my tips to keep me moving and exercising regularly in the cold are below.
1. Have a workout schedule and stick to it. Okay, this goes for any time of year, not just the winter, but especially in the winter it is difficult to want to get up and move when you feel like you just want to be in hibernation mode! Having a schedule– and a workout buddy — will help hold you accountable. Plus, lounging on the couch in your PJs feels so much better after you’ve worked out and taken a hot shower! Weekly Workout Schedules are live on Fit+Fave every Sunday! I do the planning for you…you just need to show up for 30 minutes 🙂
2. Having at-home exercise equipment is extremely helpful for those that don’t have access to a gym or possibly can’t get to a gym for whatever reason…including inclement weather! Don’t let that winter snowstorm (ice storm if you live in NC!) keep you from your YOU TIME! I shared in this post My Home Workout Equipment Essentials, it’s all the gear I have at home and all I think you really NEED to get in your workout in your living room. With these pieces, you can definitely do any workout that I post on the weekly schedule!
3. Sometimes, you’re just going to have to suck it up and go outside. In the cold. Don’t worry, you’ll warm up soon enough!
Be sure you have the right equipment for running outside. I can’t speak to extreme winter conditions as I live in what is probably a more relatively mild winter but we certainly get temps here in North Carolina into the teens at times and have snow/ice generally in January-March. Here’s my list of what I have to have for outdoor running in the winter:
- Thermal head wrap. I use this one and it’s my favorite for running or hiking, etc.
- Running Sunglasses. You need these year round but they are especially helpful to keep the wind from making your eyes water!)
- Bluetooth headphones (I use these and love them. These are the same brand. These are less expensive but I can’t speak to the quality since I’ve never used that brand)
- Neck Gaiter (I often pull this up over my nose and mouth to keep my face warm!)
- Touch screen capable gloves: Here are some heavy duty ones and here are some burner gloves for those winter races:)
- Under Armour cold gear top
- Under Armour cold gear leggings, love these and these
- Chapstick so your lips don’t chap out in the cold 🙂
- Don’t forget a warm jacket!
What are some of your tips?!

Bess
